It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that Jay-Z reigns supreme this week on the Billboard chart with his newest album, “Magna Carta Holy Grail.” According to Nielsen SoundScan, the album, which was officially released on July 7, sold more than 500,000 copies in its first week.
What’s particularly impressive is those numbers don’t include the 1.2 million copies of “MCHG” that Samsung gave to its Galaxy phone users on Independence Day. The album is doing well online as well, with more than 14 million streams on Spotify.
“MCHG” is the latest rap album to take over the charts this month. The trend began with Kanye West’s “Yeezus,” followed by Wale’s “The Gifted” and J. Cole’s sophomore album “Born Sinner” last week.
Jay-Z’s latest effort also gives him his 13th number-one album and the record for most number-one albums by a solo artist.
