What Year is This? School Holds 1st Integrated Prom
Prom. It’s a rite of passage for high school students across the country. Some would argue it’s as American as baseball and apple pie.
But what about when prom is segregated? Then it definitely falls short of the American dream.
This past weekend, a Georgia high school held its first racially integrated prom. Yes, it’s 2014.
According to Huffington Post, Wilcox County School has not previously sponsored proms. Instead, the school allowed parents to host “segregated, invitation-only” events. A group of students organized an integrated prom last year; however, it was not sanctioned by the school.
We’re glad to see folks coming to their senses, but we can’t help but wonder…what took so long?!
