Watch: Dash Cam Video of Walter Scott Killing

South Carolina authorities have released dash cam video of the moments leading up to the fatal shooting of Walter Scott. While the footage does not show the actual shooting, viewers can see when former police officer Michael Slager pulled Scott over in what started off as a routine traffic stop.

The four-minute clip shows Slager approaching Scott’s vehicle. Scott tells the officer he does not have insurance and is in the process of purchasing the vehicle. Slager then returns to his patrol car. Scott attempts to exit the vehicle, but Slager tells him to stay in the car. Scott gets out of the car again and runs away out of the dash cam’s view.

The video also shows that Scott is not alone in the vehicle. A police report obtained by CNN does not disclose the passenger’s identity, but another officer responding to the call said in the report that the passenger was detained and placed in the back seat of a squad car.

Chris Stewart, who is representing the Scott family, said the man with Scott was a co-worker and friend. The family thinks that Scott ran out of concerns regarding issues with child support.

Scott owed $18,104.43 in back payments and had a bench warrant issued against him for failure to pay at the time he was pulled over by Slager.

“This dash cam footage does not change the fact that at the moment the officer shot and killed Mr. Scott — that shooting was completely unjustified,” Attorney Justin Bamberg, who is also representing the Scott family said. “And that is the key point of both the criminal investigation and the civil lawsuit.”

North Charleston’s Police Department is not releasing any information due to an ongoing investigation that’s being conducted by the independent South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED).

Slager is in a custody and has been charged with first-degree murder.
