Voter Registration Rises in Ferguson

An unexpected result in the aftermath of Michael Brown’s death has been an increase in voter registration.

According to USA Today, more than 3,000 people have registered to vote in Ferguson, Missouri since Brown, Black, was fatally shot by Darren Wilson, a White police officer, on Aug. 9, for a total of 4,839 new registrations in St. Louis County.

Racial tensions in the community have soared following the shooting, which a grand jury is currently reviewing.

The city of Ferguson is predominately Black; however, the majority of the city council members are White, in addition to Mayor James Knowles III.

The Nov. 4 election features a race between state representative Rick Stream, a Republican, and County Councilman Steve Stenger, a Democrat, for county executive.
