Video of CPD Officer Assaulting Man Surfaces
Investigators are looking into a Chicago police officer’s actions after video of him kicking a suspect in the head was posted online.
Superintendent Eddie Johnson ordered the investigation after viewing the video. WGN reports that an unknown plainclothes officer is seen on the video struggling to handcuff a Black male on the city’s West Side Monday.
The man, identified as Shaquille O’Neal, 24, appears to be resisting arrest in the video. Moments later, a second plain clothes officers arrives and calls for backup. He kicks O’Neal in the head as he continues to resist.
At that point O’Neal appears to be unconscious. The officers cuff him as he lies still unassisted until paramedics arrive.
The Chicago Police Department’s News Affairs Office issued the following statement:
“The Chicago Police Department holds its members to the highest possible professional standards with a priority on treating all Chicagoans with respect. Upon viewing the video, Superintendent Johnson immediately asked the Independent Police Review Authority to investigate the matter while the department gathers more information about the case.”
