Video: Judge Goes Off on Racist Cops
A former Michigan police officer was sentenced to up to ten years behind bars for beating an unarmed driver during a traffic stop last year.
William Melendez, 47, was videotaped via police dash cam as he assaulted driver Floyd Dent in Jan. 2015. Dent was struck 16 times and testified that he was choked so hard that he lost consciousness.
Melendez was fired in April from the Inkster Police Department. He was found guilty in November of misconduct in office and assault with intent to do great bodily harm, according to NBC News.
On Tuesday, Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Vonda Evans commented on Melendez’s actions before sentencing.
“You were so into your bravado that you forgot the eye of justice was recording you,” said Evans. “You knew better. You were better trained than any of those officers out there. You were more experienced.”
