Video: Delaware Cops Fatally Shoot Disabled Man
A graphic video showing a Delaware police officer fatally shooting a Black man in a wheelchair has been released.
Wilmington Police Department officials say members of its force were dispatched to a parking lot Wednesday afternoon. The man was believed to be suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and still armed.
The man, later identified as Jeremy McDole, was seen holding a revolver-style handgun, police say. The cops also said they repeatedly ordered him to drop his weapon.
In the disturbing video, an officer can be heard yelling, “Show me your hands!” Several officers arrive at the scene and yell, “Hands up!”
McDole is seen adjusting his body in the wheelchair, and officers open fire soon after.
While Chief Bobby Cummings said McDole’s movements indicated he was about to “remove the weapon from his waist,” his family says he was unfairly killed.
“This was murder,” McDole’s mother, Phyllis said before a press conference on Thursday, according to the Delaware News Journal. “He shot my son like he was roadkill.”
The case is currently under investigation.
