Vanity 6 Lead Singer Denise Matthews Dies

Famed singer and actress Denise “Vanity” Matthews has died.

She was 57.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the “Vanity 6” star passed away from kidney failure in a Fremont, CA hospital Monday.

The Canadian-born singer was also a songwriter, model, and dancer. Vanity 6 was best known for their hit single, “Nasty Girl,” which was produced by Prince and topped the Billboard charts.

Matthews also recorded two solo albums for Motown: Wild Animal and Skin on Skin. Her acting credits include, The Last Dragon, Action Jackson and Terror Train.

Matthews became a born-again Christian after a near-fatal drug overdose in 1994. As a result, she renounced her former identity, “Vanity.”

In 2010, she released a self-published autobiography, Blame It on Vanity.

According to reports, Matthews’ health problems took a turn for the worse last year. After being diagnosed with sclerosis encapsulating peritonitis, a rare kidney condition, she set up a crowdfunding campaign to help pay for medical treatments, but feel more than $43,000 short of her $50,000 goal.
