Donald Trump Condones Roughing Up Protester

On Sunday, Donald Trump suggested that a protester who interrupted his rally at a Birmingham convention center the day before “should have been roughed up.”

Mercutio Southall Jr. is a well-known activist in the city. He has been repeatedly arrested while protesting against the unfair treatment of Blacks. He interrupted Trump’s rally with shouts of, “Black lives matter!”

A fight broke out, prompting Trump to call for Southall’s removal.

“Get him the hell out of here, will you, please?” Trump said on Saturday morning. “Get him out of here. Throw him out!”
The Washington Post reports that at one point, Southall fell to the ground and was surrounded by several white men who appeared to be kicking and punching him. A reporter for the paper who was standing in the crowd watched as one of the men put his hands on Southall’s neck and heard a female spectator repeatedly yell, “Don’t choke him!”

Security officers got Southall to his feet, but he was repeatedly shoved and pushed by people in the crowd as he made his way out of the building.

“Maybe he should have been roughed up, because it was absolutely disgusting what he was doing,” Trump said on the Fox News Channel on Sunday morning. “I have a lot of fans, and they were not happy about it. And this was a very obnoxious guy who was a trouble-maker who was looking to make trouble.”

Trump’s comments are different from a month ago, when he would regularly encourage his audiences not to harm protesters who interrupted his rallies.

“Don’t hurt ’em,” Trump said at a rally in Miami on Oct. 23 as pro-immigration activists were led out. “You can get ’em out, but don’t hurt ’em.”

Oh, brother.
