Trans Male Stabbed After Offering Seat on Subway

Ijan DaVonte Jarrett, a Black transgendered male, probably never thought that even in today’s societal and racial climate, offering his seat on the subway would take a drastic turn.

But, sadly it did.

While riding the subway in New York on the evening of Christmas, Jarrett, 44, offered Stephanie Pazmino, 30, his seat on the crowded train in Harlem. She refused. According to sources, while speaking in spanish, Pazmino said that she didn’t want to sit next to Black people.

The grio reports that Jarrett paid the rhetoric no mind and got up anyway so that Pazmino could sit down. He took a seat across from her and what happened next struck him off-guard.

As she got up to leave the train, she began to punch Jarrett and then proceeded to stab him with a two-inch knife. He says he didn’t realize he was being stabbed until another man rushed to help him.

“I ran to the ticket booth to ask the attendant to call the police,” Jarrett told the Grio. “She stated that she did and that I should sit down. And I passed out after that.”

Jarrett was taken to Harlem Hospital and said he’s unsure if he was attacked for being Black and transgendered.

As for Pazmino, she was arrested and charged with assault as a hate crime, reckless endangerment and weapons endangerment.
