2-year-old, Man Killed in Chicago Shooting

A 2-year-old boy and a 26-year-old man were killed Tuesday afternoon in a shooting on Chicago’s West Side, WGN reports.

The shooting happened just before 1:30 p.m. and was caught on Facebook Live by a 20-year-old pregnant woman who was also with the pair.

Police say Lavontay White, 2, was in a car with the two adults when he was shot. In the video, a man and woman can be seen riding down an alley listening to music. Suddenly, a man runs up on the vehicle and shoots into it, striking the man and child in the head. The woman, also hit, can be seen fleeing the car and crying for help.

The shooting took place in the 2300 block of South Kenneth Ave. in the city’s North Lawndale neighborhood.

Police say the gunman fired more than a dozen times into the vehicle. The man who died at the scene was a documented gang member and was the target of the shooting, officials say.

“One victim of one shooting is one too many, but when innocent children are caught in the crossfire of gun violence and young people have their childhood stolen by stray bullets, our consciences are shaken and our hearts are broken,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a statement. “Every parent, regardless of where they live, should be able to take their child for a walk to the park or a ride in the car. These are normal rites of passage of childhood.”

On Saturday, an 11-year-old girl and 12-year-old girl were shot in the head in two separate incidents on the city’s South and West sides. The 11-year-old, Takiya Holmes, succumbed to her injuries Tuesday morning. The 12-year-old, Kanari Gentry Bowers, remains in critical condition.

Story developing.
