Teen Dies While Fleeing Police
A Bronx teen who fell off the roof of a six-story apartment building while fleeing police officers on Thursday died of his injuries over the weekend.
Police say Hakeem Kuta, 17, was with a group of teenagers who were smoking pot Thursday evening in the lobby of a Bronx apartment building when a man complained to four uniformed officers. Kuta and several others ran to the roof once the police entered the lobby and a chase ensued. All but Mr. Kuta and a 14-year-old were able to escape the police. He tried to step over a wall at the edge of the building but stumbled, police say. The 14-year-old reached for Kuta’s vest as he fell, but was not able to hang on.
According to the NYPD, the officers involved appeared to have acted appropriately. After Mr. Kuta fell, they raced from the roof to give first aid with Officer Maria Imburgia applying chest compressions until paramedics arrived.
Marijuana was found in the lobby, but officers made no arrests. Kuta had no criminal record. A relative said he moved to the U.S. about three or four years ago with his parents and younger sister.
