Student Expelled for Accidental Science Explosion

Model student Kiera Wilmot was charged with two felonies and expelled from Bartow Senior High in Bartow, FL after a science experiment went wrong. While on school grounds, the 16-year-old mixed household chemicals in a water bottle, creating a small explosion that did not harm anyone or cause any damage, yet she will be tried as an adult.

“She is a good kid,” said the school’s principal, Ron Pritchard. “She has never been in trouble before. Ever.” Unfortunately, his sentiments are not shared by all. The Polk County School District said in a statement that students need to learn “there are consequences to their actions.”

The teen is being charged with possession/discharge of a weapon on school property and discharging a destructive device.  Change.org is currently circulating a petition calling for the school district to drop the charges and re-enroll Wilmot.
