The nation’s eyes are trained on Florida because of the racially polarizing trial against George Zimmerman, but there is a significant update to another controversial case involving the sunshine state.
Today, Marissa Alexander of Jacksonville was sentenced to 20 years in prison for attempted murder, inciting outrage. The 31-year-old mother, and alleged victim of domestic abuse, gained national attention after attempting to use the “stand your ground law” to defend herself against charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. In August of 2010, Alexander fired warning shots at her estranged husband whom she says was trying to attack her inside their family home. Alexander had previously had a restraining order against him.
