WATCH: Michael Sam’s Arthur ESPY Speech

Michael Sam made history during the 2014 NFL Draft for being the first publicly gay player to be drafted in the league.

Wednesday night at the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles, he gave an emotional speech about his history-making experience after winning the Arthur Ashe Courage award.

“The late great Arthur Ashe wasn’t just courageous he was brilliant, too,” said Sam in his speech.

“He put all the wisdom in the world into three great sentences: ‘Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.’ Those are words to live by whether you’re Black or White, young or old, straight or gay.”
