Once again Serena Williams is drawing attention, but not for her sense of fashion. Speaking her mind in a recent Rolling Stone’s issue, the tennis player made some bold comments about the 16-year-old Steubenville, Ohio rape victim.
“Do you think it was fair, what they got?,” she asked her interviewer. “They did something stupid, but I don’t know. I’m not blaming the girl, but if you’re a 16-year-old and you’re drunk like that, your parents should teach you: Don’t take drinks from other people,” according to E-online.
“She’s 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn’t remember?” she continued. “It could have been much worse. She’s lucky. Obviously, I don’t know, maybe she wasn’t a virgin, but she shouldn’t have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that’s different.”
To eliminate the negative comments she posted a statement on her blog expressing her feelings about the rape.
She described what happened to the victim as a “horrible tragedy” and said that she was shocked and sad when she learned about the incident.
Williams went on to say she has always fought for women’s equal rights and she always supports the rape victim.
