Remembering Claudia House Morcom
Fifty years ago, Claudia House Morcom fought for civil rights as a Freedom Rider.
The former judge, who lived in Detroit, passed away August 17 at the age of 82.
At the time of the Freedom Summer, Morcom was a young lawyer. MichiganRadio.org noted that Morcom provided “legal defense for civil rights workers” and “filed federal lawsuits asking that Mississippi congressmen be thrown out of office for not representing their Black constituents.”
According to the State Bar of Michigan blog, a memorial service will be held this Saturday and donations are being accepted for the Judge Claudia House Morcom Annual Scholarship.
