Rachel Dolezal’s Parents Appear on ‘Today Show’

The parents of a woman who pretended to be Black for several years appeared on the Today Show early Monday. Even though Rachel Dolezal is pretty adamant about being Black, Ruthanne and Lawrence Dolezal continue to dispute her claims.

“We’re puzzled…she may have felt some advantage with her activism,” Lawrence Dolezal said about why his daughter decided to be Black during the interview. Her parents were also asked why they decided to go public with news of Rachel’s actual race.

Rachel’s claims that she was born in a teepee and grew up hunting for food with a bow and arrow were falsified according to  her parents, who say that they have told all 6 of their children to “Tell the truth. Always be honest.”

“I think Rachel has tried to damage her biological family and those kind of claims, as false as they were, seem to serve her purposes in her mind,” her mother, Ruthanne Dolezal, said Monday on TODAY.

News of the Washington state NAACP leader pretending to be Black spread like wildfire on Friday after a local reporter asked the activist if her father was African American. The obviously awkward interview went viral, sparking a series of debates, some even comparing Dolezal’s case to that of Caitlyn Jenner. The former Olympian revealed that she was transgender, and debuted a new identity to the world via Vanity Fair earlier this month.

Ruthanne and Lawrence Dolezal are also set to appear on Good Morning America.
