Northbound lanes of Chicago’s Dan Ryan Expressway were briefly shut down by protesters early Thursday.
Pictures that surfaced on social media show about a dozen protesters blocking the Dan Ryan at 95th Street. They later blocked a ramp at 87th Street. Police issued citations to roughly two dozen protesters for disturbing the flow of traffic.
The activists say they are upset about the state budget impasse and a lack of funding for Chicago State University. The blocking of expressway lanes was a symbol of state lawmakers “blocking” their education.
Protesters told WGN News that if a state budget is not approved, CSU will run out of cash reserves in the next month and be forced to close its doors.
University President Thomas Calhoun confirms those claims for the university.
