States Considering Free Tuition for Community Colleges

Nothing sparks consumer demand like the word “free,” and politicians in some states have proposed the idea of providing that incentive to get young people to attend community college. Amid worries that U.S. youth are losing a global skills race, supporters of a no-tuition policy see expanding access to community college as way to boost educational attainment so the emerging workforces in their states look good to employers.

Black NYC Firefighters Announce $98M Settlement

About 1,500 minorities who took New York City fire department entrance exams that were found to be biased will be eligible to receive back pay totaling $98 million, a black firefighters’ group that had sued the city over racial discrimination said Tuesday. The settlement of the 7-year-old case capped a long and arduous legal fight by the group, the Vulcan Society, over diversity in the fire department. In a city where more than half of residents identify with a racial minority group, black firefighters have never made up more than 4 percent of the department’s total.

A ‘Bad Day’ in Rehab Costs Chris Brown His Freedom

With a roll of his eyes and a comment that he was good at using guns and knives, Chris Brown may have cost himself weeks of freedom and his chance to get back to making music anytime soon. The reasons for Brown’s dismissal from a Malibu rehab facility were detailed in court on Monday, with a judge ordering the Grammy winner to remain in jail until a formal probation violation hearing can be convened on April 23.

Prince Joins Instagram, Releases New Song

We’ve probably seen more of Prince in the last four months than we have the last four years, but we’re not complaining! After a guest appearance on New Girl earlier this year, the Purple One has teamed up with actress Zooey Deschanel for a new song “FALLINLOVE2NITE.” But that’s not all, Prince recently joined Instagram as well, or as he dubbed it, Princestagram.
