Heart-clogging trans fats were once a staple of the American diet, plentiful in baked goods, microwave popcorn and fried foods. Now, mindful of the health risks, the Food and Drug Administration is getting rid of what’s left of them for good. Condemning artificial trans fats as a threat to public health, the FDA announced Thursday it will require the food industry to phase them out.
The Senate has approved a bill outlawing workplace discrimination against gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. The vote reflected the nation’s rapidly evolving attitude toward gay rights nearly two decades after Congress rejected same-sex marriage. The final tally was 64-32.
Community activists in Metro Detroit are demanding justice for slain teen Renisha McBride. McBride, 19, was allegedly killed by a homeowner after she sought help following a car accident. Police reports state that McBride was shot in the back of her head with a shotgun as she left the homeowner’s porch. Her family members believe she was a victim of racial profiling.
A second suspect was arrested and charged in the abduction and killing of a Mississippi couple and their 7-year-old son, authorities said Thursday. Cedric D. Mason, 30, of Jackson, was arrested late Wednesday on two counts of capital murder and two counts of kidnapping, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said in a news release. Authorities said they are still trying to piece together exactly what happened.
A Chinese man has successful sued his wife for bearing what he claims is an “extremely ugly girl.” Jian Feng accused his wife of cheating because he could “never father an unattractive child.” After a DNA test proved he was, in fact, the baby daddy his wife made a startling confession: she’d had $100,000 worth of plastic surgery in South Korea.
After pictures surfaced of Idris Elba shopping with Naiyana Garth, the rumor mill went into full effect. The London-based hair and makeup artist who appears to be about three or four months pregnant, but it’s unclear if Elba is the father.
Kanye West pleads not guilty to misdemeanor battery and attempted grand theft in the case filed earlier this year regarding the altercation with photographer, Daniel Ramos. Both misdemeanors carry a six-month penalty or a $1,000 fine, but West isn’t due back in court until January 23.
After failing two drug tests, rapper Chief Keef will now have to appear in court to determine where he should undergo drug treatment. He had been ordered to undergo random drug testing after pleading guilty to a speeding ticket he received over the summer.
