The suspect, identified as Michael Brandon Hill, held one or two staff members in the front office of Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy captive for a time, the police chief said, making one of them call a local TV station. As officers swarmed the campus outside, he shot at them at least a half a dozen times with an assault rifle from inside the school and they returned fire, said DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric L. Alexander. Hill then surrendered. No one was injured.
Police have charged Chancey Allen Luna, 16, and James Francis Edwards Jr., 15, of Duncan, with first-degree murder in the death of Australian baseball player Christopher Lane. Under Oklahoma law they will be tried as adults. Michael Dewayne Jones, 17, of Duncan, was charged with using a vehicle in the discharge of a weapon and with accessory to first-degree murder after the fact. He is considered a youthful offender but will be tried in adult court.
Did they or didn’t they? The rumor mill was hard at work this morning about Beyonce and Jay Z’s reported purchase of Chicago’s Regal Theatre for $250,000. But an anonymous source has told a local news outlet that the rumors are false. No word from the power couple’s rep, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens with this story.
The hip-hop entrepreneur has issued an apology to Harriet Tubman’s descendants for the sex tape spoof and claims he wants to make a legitimate movie about the Underground Railroad hero. The question we have to ask though: is he genuine?
Drizzy Drake has been added to the ever-growing lists of artists performing at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, Aug. 25. Kanye West and Justin Timberlake, who is expected to receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award, are slated to perform as well. We’ll be watching!
Rutina Wesley, who plays Tara Thornton on HBO’s popular vampire series, “True Blood,” has filed for divorce from her husband Jacob Fishel. The couple met in acting school and had been married for eight years. Divorce papers, filed Aug. 16, cite “irreconcilable differences.”
The “Prison Break” star has declined to attend a Russian film festival because of the country’s treatment toward gay individuals, such as himself. In a letter to the film festival’s director, the 41-year-old actor said he is “deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government.”
Famed Author, Critic Dies
The world lost an influential author last Sunday, Aug. 18. Albert Murray was a well-known novelist who saw blues and jazz as art. He appreciated Black culture and even worked with novelists, such as Thomas Mann and Ernest Hemingway. Ralph Ellison was a good friend of his. Murray died in his sleep at the age of 97.
Most of us honored Trayvon Martin by attending rallies and sporting hoodies and t-shirts. Well, the rapper The Game isn’t most people. He recently got the slain teen’s face tattooed on his leg, a process that took seven hours. He later posted a picture on Instagram.
The cast of “Rizzoli & Isles” paid tribute to fallen actor, Lee Thompson Young, on the show’s latest episode Tuesday night. Two short, silent clips of the actor and a title card that read “In Loving Memory of Lee Thompson Young 1984-2013” appeared on the screen at the end of the episode.
The Queen of Soul is certainly on the road to recovery after canceling several concert shows and an appearance at an MLB luncheon. Today, the singer reported she and her doctors have seen a “miraculous” improvement in her health. “Anytime you have cancellations you should be concerned. But all prayer is good, and keep me in your prayers until I am 100 percent, not 85, and back onstage,” she said.
The Memphis rapper has found an interesting way for fans to stream his album before it hits stores Aug. 27 through a stripper game. The game, featured on his website, requires players to throw money at dancers, using the spacebar, in order to hear the “Bandz A Make Her Dance” rapper’s latest tracks.
The R&B crooner and comedian Kevin Hart showed their philanthropic side this weekend by hosting the second annual “Fostering A Legacy” event. Held in The Hamptons, celebs gathered to donate funds to The Compound Foundation, an organization which aims to provide children in foster care with resources that would not be otherwise available to them.
Dear Mr. X, when will you learn to stay out of trouble? The rapper was arrested and charged with marijuana possession on Tuesday. His publicist, Domenick Nati, says “No drugs were found on DMX or the other passengers and the alleged bags of marijuana were never shown to DMX or the other passengers” in an email to JET magazine. The rapper, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was charged with drunk driving last month.
