Police: Man Kills Stepmom Over Cowboys Win
An Austin, Tex., man was arrested Sunday after allegedly stabbing his stepmother to death when she boasted about the Dallas Cowboys’ win that evening, according to a police report.
Officials say police arrived at the apartment of Magdalena Ruiz, 35, at about 10:39 Sunday night and found her unresponsive with multiple stab wounds to the chest. Detectives later learned that Ruiz had been in the home with her husband, Pontrey Simon and stepson Pontrey O’Neal Jones watching television.
But according to an affidavit obtained by KEYE-TV, Jones, 20, told police he had been planning to kill his younger sister. But upon changing his mind, he waited until after the game between the Cowboys and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had ended, got some fresh air and confronted Ruiz about “disrespecting his father and gloating about how the Cowboys won the game.”
Police say that’s when he got a knife, reached over a couch and began stabbing Ruiz multiple times. Simon attempted to intervene, but O’Neal fled the apartment. Police found him about 10 minutes later lying naked in the grass of a nearby home and took him into custody.
Officers began administering first aid to Ruiz until emergency responders arrived and took her to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Jones was charged with murder and was being held by the Travis County Sheriff’s Department on $500,000 bond.
