Police Reportedly Beat Mentally Ill Man

The NAACP is demanding justice after a mentally ill man was allegedly brutally beaten by police during an arrest.

According to Los Angeles news station KTLABarry Montgomery Jr.’s family described him as a “harmless paranoid schizophrenic.” The 29-year-old man has suffered “massive permanent injures” following a violent arrest last month.

Officers had approached Montgomery after detecting the scent of marijuana and reportedly beat him when he failed to respond.

Montgomery’s sister, Ty Ellis, said her brother does not talk and the family’s attorney, Martin Kaufman, described Montgomery as “docile.”

The news follows reports about protests in the aftermath of Michael Brown’s death and a similar instance involving LAPD officers.
