Police Presence Reported at “The Butler” Screening
Try watching a film with armed guards facing you as you munch on your popcorn. Well, that’s what a group of moviegoers in Silver Spring, Maryland experienced over the weekend.
Attendees were at the Regal Cinemas Majestic Screening of Lee Daniel’s “The Butler” last week when a large police presence greeted them at the door. Their tickets were checked twice and they were stared down, while trying to watch the movie in peace.
One woman expressed her displeasure on Twitter. Tiffany Flowers was quick to share an experience she considered “unpleasant.” She described the audience as predominately Black, which led her to believe the patrons were being discriminated against.
The theater released a statement to the Huffington Post, saying “Regal Entertainment Group routinely employs security personnel to ensure the safety all of our guests and staff. When a theatre experiences sold out showings of any feature, security will assist with crowd control and guest assistance throughout the facility, including auditoriums.”
The movie came in number one at the box office this weekend.
