Woman Displays Horrors of Police Brutality
A Detroit woman is bringing a shocking reality to life on her very own front lawn this Halloween season.
Larethia Haddon’s yard is filled with decorations that depict victims of police shootings, neighborhood violence and the Flint water crisis.
Haddon’s display isn’t a first. Last year, she used the holiday to make a statement by depicting a dead body on her doorstep.
“The kids aren’t afraid of the boogey man anymore,” she told WJBK. “They say grandma, we’re scared to go outside and play.”
Haddon laid out six dummies across her lawn to represent violence, discrimination and what could be for many the result of encounters with police.
“A lady was standing out here yesterday looking at the scene and she was just crying, just breaking down in tears,” Haddon said. “So I came out and I just held her.”
The display is only available for viewing during the day, Haddon said, and every day it draws a crowd.
“It’s definitely thought-provoking,” said Kevin Mays, who came out to see the display. “It’s addressing a whole lot of issues that are going on right now. ”
Some people thought the dummies were real and even called police, Haddon said.
“At first I did think something was wrong but when I looked at it, and started to read, I’m like, oh, Flint water, I get it,” Alesia Diaz said. ” A book bag bombing, I get it.”
Last year, police went to Haddon’s home several times to make sure nothing was wrong. That was when she had just one dummy on her lawn.
“If you’re going to get this much attention, you need to do something that’s going to make people aware of the situations that are going on,” she said. “If we don’t open our eyes and see what’s going on, it’s just going to keep on happening.”
