Photo: Martese Johnson Chained During Arrest

A newly released photo shows that 20-year-old University of Virginia honors student Martese Johnson was handcuffed and chained at the ankles during his arrest. The photo follows a recent interview with Trinity Bar owner Kevin Badke, who stated that Martese was sober and cooperative after being refused entry into his establishment.

“He was in line, tried to give me his ID. I looked at it, and the only thing I looked at was the zip code — because through ABC training that we’ve had as a liquor licensed business, one of the things you want to ask is certain questions about the ID…Before you even look at the photo or the birthdates, one of the things I ask…is their zip code. And he gave me the wrong zip code,” Badke told the Cavalier Daily. “He grabbed his ID and walked away — it was business as usual,” Badke said. “I went back to carding other patrons that were coming in, and then I heard a commotion. I turned around, and he was on the ground.”

Earlier this week, UVA alums launched a campaign to raise funds for Johnson’s medical and legal expenses tied to the incident. Johnson has been charged with public intoxication and obstruction of justice. He plans to enter a plea of not guilty.
