PBS Postpones ‘Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates Jr.’

PBS is postponing season three of the show Finding Your Roots” after an investigation revealed that Ben Affleck persuaded producers to omit information about his slave-owning ancestors.

Two months ago, a series of hacked emails exposed exchanges between Henry Louis Gates Jr., who hosts the show, and a Sony executive, where they discussed whether adhering to the Oscar winner’s wishes to exclude part of his history would cause the network to “lose control of the brand.”

PBS certainly seemed to think so as they have put the show on hold until making some staff changes, which include hiring a fact checker and an independent genealogist.

When the episode originally aired in October, there was no mention of Affleck’s slave-owning family members. And the network has stated that producers were in violation, because they allowed the actor to have “improper influence” and failed “to inform PBS or WNET of Mr. Affleck’s efforts to affect program content.”

There has been no announcement regarding an air date for season three or whether there will be a fourth season. What are your thoughts on the penalty? Tell us by taking the poll below.
