Officer Who Shot Corey Jones Fired

A Florida police officer who fatally shot a man whose car broke down last month has been fired.

Palm Beach Gardens police Officer Nouman Raja, who was in plainclothes when he shot 31-year-old Corey Jones along a highway on Oct. 18, had been on paid leave since the incident.

An investigation will determine whether charges will be filed against Raja, CNN reports.

Raja was hired in April, and on a probationary period at the time of incident.

The city did not give a reason for his firing, other than to say the firing was within the city’s rights, given the probationary period of his employment.

In a release the city said it had been “cautiously and methodically considering (Raja’s) employment status.”

Corey Jones was phoning roadside assistance during the early morning hours of Oct. 18 because his car broke down. The popular musician was returning from a gig.

Four agencies, including the FBI, are investigating. Check back for updates.
