Musician Corey Jones Shot Dead by Fla. Cops
Police in Florida have launched an independent investigation after a plainclothes police officer fatally wounded a well-known local drummer, NBC News reports.
Palm Beach Gardens Police Officer Nouman Raja killed 31-year-old Corey Jones early Sunday off Interstate 95.
Raja initially pulled over in his unmarked police vehicle to investigate what he thought was an abandoned vehicle, but was “suddenly confronted by an armed subject,” officials say.
“As a result of the confrontation, the officer discharged his firearm resulting in the death of the subject, Corey Jones,” a statement released by the department said.
Raja is currently on paid administrative leave “per department policy.” The Palm Beack County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an independent investigation.
Palm Beach County Police Benevolent Association President John Kazanjian said that officers have been receiving death threats following the shooting. He blames the police chief for not being transparent enough.
“You don’t want another Ferguson where they sat on information for days and it seems like this is what Gardens is doing,” he said. You need to get out there and address the public.”
According to Jones’ relatives, he played in several bands and churches in the area.
