Host Hopes Trayvon ‘Whooped’ Zimmerman
MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry told an audience at Cornell University that she hoped Travyon Martin “whooped the sh*t” out of George Zimmerman as he tried to defend himself from the self-appointed neighborhood watchman.
Harris-Perry said this while speaking at Cornell’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Lecture on Feb. 23. Her speech was entitled, “We Can’t Breathe: The Continuing Consequences of Inequality.”
In 2012, 17-year-old Martin was unarmed, walking home from purchasing Skittles and iced tea from a nearby store when George Zimmerman confronted him. Zimmerman, who had profiled Martin as a criminal and called 911, decided to approach Martin instead of staying in his car as the police asked him to. A fight ensued where Zimmerman shot and killed Martin. Zimmerman was later acquitted of murder charges and this week news broke that the federal government is unlikely to charge Zimmerman with violating the civil rights of Martin. The case sparked a national debate about racial profiling and Florida’s controversial “Stand Your Ground” self-defense law.
