Great news for Marissa Alexander and those in our community whose hearts went out to her, especially in the wake of all this stand-your-ground controversy. The Florida mother accused of firing a gun at her husband has been granted a retrial.

As you may recall, Alexander was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2012 after she fired a warning shot during a domestic dispute with her husband back in 2010. She was charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon because the couple’s pre-teen sons were in the room as well.

According to the Associated Press, the “1st District Court of Appeal ruled that a judge did not properly instruct the jury handling the case of Marissa Alexander.” However, the appeals court maintained that Alexander could not use the “Stand Your Ground” defense, as made famous by the George Zimmerman trial this summer.

No word yet on when the new trial will take place, but JET will keep an eye on this important case.
