Police: Man Beats Toddler Son to Death
A Chicago man beat and stomped his 3-year-old son to death and knocked his pregnant fiancée into a wall so hard that she delivered the baby prematurely, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Devon Thomas, 22, is charged with murder in the death of his son Tayveon, and aggravated battery of a pregnant woman in the attack on the boy’s mother, police say. He was ordered held without bond in a midday hearing Thursday in Cook County bond court.
The woman was eight months pregnant at the time of incident.
Tayveon was pronounced dead at Roseland Community Hospital on Monday after his father called 911 from the family’s home on the 12200 block of South Green, police said.
Officials say Thomas had punched Tayveon several times in front of his mother on Saturday, and when she tried to intervene, he choked her until she started to lose consciousness. On Sunday, Tayveon had a stomachache and vomited, prosecutors said.
At the family apartment on Monday, Thomas punched Tayveon multiple times in the chest and stomach, then stomped on his legs, arms and body, prosecutors said. He then slapped his mother in the face and grabbed her by her ponytail and dragged her to the apartment’s living room.
The two argued until Tayveon’s mother noticed he was unresponsive as he lay face down on his bed with his body against the wall. His mother began doing CPR while Thomas called 911, prosecutors said. Thomas took over doing chest compressions until paramedics arrived.
The child was pronounced dead at the hospital, and within hours of his passing, his mother gave birth to her second child prematurely.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office determined Tayveon died from multiple injuries due to child abuse in a homicide.
