Kim Foxx Claims State’s Attorney Seat
Months after the release of dash cam footage revealing the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Chicago teen Laquan McDonald, Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez has lost her re-election bid.
The embattled incumbent was defeated by former Assistant State’s Attorney Kim Foxx for the Democratic nomination for the position late Tuesday.
Foxx also beat out Donna More for the nomination.
“I want to be absolutely clear in all of the jubilance about what’s happening that this race is not so much just about saying goodbye, it’s about turning a page,” Foxx told supporters on Tuesday. “I understand the excitement but let us not get lost in the gravity in the work that’s ahead of us.”
Alvarez couldn’t escape accusations that she, along with Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Police Department, actively worked to keep details of McDonald’s death from the public. The teen was shot 16 times by former CPD Officer Jason Van Dyke in Oct. 2014.
Van Dyke is currently awaiting trial for the murder.
