Jury Picked in Detroit Cop’s Manslaughter Trial

DETROIT (AP) — A jury has been selected in the trial of a Detroit police officer charged in the fatal shooting of a 7-year-old girl.

Opening statements are planned for Monday in Wayne County Circuit Court.

Joseph Weekley is charged with involuntary manslaughter. His gun fired during a chaotic raid on a Detroit home in May 2010.

Aiyana Stanley-Jones was shot in the head while asleep on a couch.

A stun grenade was used before police entered the home. A crew from the TV show “The First 48” was working with Detroit police that night, and its video will be used as evidence.

Judge Cynthia Gray Hathaway allowed reporters into the courtroom Thursday, a day after banning them without explanation.
