Jurors could not reach a verdict Tuesday, in the trial of a police officer, who fatally shot a 7-year-old girl, leading the judge to declare a mistrial.
The Wayne County Judge, Cynthia Gray Hathaway, let jurors leave only an hour after asking them to keep working Tuesday.
After three days of deliberations, the jury sent three notes. The last one said it could not reach a unanimous verdict.
Joseph Weekley is charged with involuntary manslaughter. In 2010, the officer led a raid to find a murder suspect. He accidentally fired his gun, which killed Aiyana Stanley-Jones.
The trigger was pulled while struggling with Stanley-Jones’ grandmother, he said. Mertilla Jones denied interfering.
