6-Month-Old Murdered in Chicago

Jonylah Watkins

The constant threat of gun violence in Chicago has claimed yet another young life. Yesterday, March 11, 2013, 6-month-old Jonylah Watkins was the victim of a random shooting as the infant was hit with gunfire while her father, 28-year-old Jonathan Watkins, was changing her diaper in the front seat of the family vehicle.

Despite several surgeries little Jonylah, who was shot five times—including her thigh, shoulder, lung, liver and bowels—died early this morning from her injuries, while her father, who was also struck in the shooting, remains in stable condition. According to Police Supt. Garry McCarthy, the incident has “very strong gang overtones” and Mr. Watkins is believed to have been the intended target.

“This is another tragedy,” McCarthy said, “Because no child, certainly not an infant, should be a victim of gun violence.”

While police are investigating several strong leads they have not released information on any suspects. Chicago Pastor Corey Brooks, who camped out on the roof of a south side motel for several weeks to raise money for a community center to thwart gun violence last year, has offered a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of Jonylah’s shooter.

Anyone with information on this case should call Area Central Detectives at 312-747-8380.
