A St. Louis jury has awarded the family of an Alabama woman who sued Johnson & Johnson after developing ovarian cancer following prolonged use of its baby powder $72 million.

The civil suit, filed by Jackie Fox, was part of a broader Missouri claim involving almost 60 people. She died in Oct. 2015, but her son took over as plaintiff in the lawsuit.

Attorneys representing Fox’s family said the verdict was the first case among more than 1,000 nationally to result in a monetary award.

Jury members determined Fox was entitled to $10 million in actual damages and $62 million in punitive damages.

According to a spokeswoman for Johnson & Johnson, the company was considering whether to appeal the verdict.
