Food Stamp Debit Cards Fail
Residents in 17 states, including Ohio and Michigan, could not use their food stamp debit-style cards on Saturday after the system crashed during a routine maintenance check by Xerox.
The system was back and running again by that evening, but beneficiaries were still experiencing connectivity issues.
While the technical staff moved to restore the system, food stamp carriers worked with their local retailers to activate an emergency voucher system if it was available.
“Restarting the EBT system required time to ensure service was back at full functionality…We appreciate our clients’ patience,” company spokeswoman Jennifer Wasmer told The Associated Press.
U.S. Department of Agriculture spokeswoman Courtney Rowe underscored that the outage was not related to the government shutdown.
