The FBI is now officially launching a massive investigation into the Democratic National Committee email hack. Sources and experts predict that these hackers are government workers in Russia, ABC News reports.

More than 19,000 emails from Democratic Party officials were leaked ahead of Hillary Clinton’s nomination announcement at the DNC this week in Philadelphia. The FBI confirmed the emails detail the split between Clinton’s former rival, Bernie Sanders and the Democratic National Committee.

The FBI is investigating a cyber intrusion involving the DNC and is working to determine the nature and scope of the matter.

“A compromise of this nature is something we take very seriously, and the FBI will continue the investigate and hold accountable those that pose a threat in cyberspace,” the FBI said in a statement on Monday.

Since June, the FBI has been reluctant to confirm if they were investigating the hack, or if a hack even took place.

The hack allowed cyber operatives to steal internal messages that show efforts by DNC officials undermining Bernie Sanders during the primary season. The scandal arrives on the heels of DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz announcing her resignation, which is effective at the end of the week.
