Fashion’s Night Out is officially on hiatus in the United States, according to their official website.
FNO kicked off in New York in September 2009 at the peak of the recession, when retailers were struggling to get people into their stores. The event, which spread to other major cities across the country, was originally created to help boost sales with the lure of major discounts, celebrity sightings, and lots of free booze. However, many doubted whether the formula was working the way it needed to because more people were interested in the celebrity of it than actually buying clothes.
Sponsors of the event – Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and NYC & Co. – came to the joint decision to go on hiatus so that retailers and designers could focus on their budget instead of investing so much money into one night.
FNO will still be held in select international cities, which can be found here.
