The plastic surgeon who operated on Kanye West’s mother, Donda West, the day before she died is finally speaking out about the incident in a new interview with Entertainment Tonight. In 2007, Dr. Jan Adams conducted a series of plastic surgery procedures— including a breast augmentation, tummy tuck and liposuction— on West who died from complications less than 24 hours later.

“I feel responsible totally because I’m the surgeon and I’m the guy in charge,” Adams says. “But I’m not the guy to blame.”

Though cleared of any wrongdoing in the case by the L.A. coroner, Adams surrendered his medical license after several DUIs and spent eight months in jail. He is currently petitioning the California Medical Board to regain his right to practice medicine.

In his recent sit down, Adams tells ET that he believes West’s death was caused by aspiration, which comes from drawing food or liquid into airways which can block breathing.
