Protests Ensue Following Trump Victory
Violent protests ensued early Wednesday following Donald Trump’s presidential victory over Hillary Clinton.
KTVU reports that several trash fires were ablaze in the middle of the street. In addition to the fire lit garbage cans, protesters vandalized several businesses, and shattered store fronts along Broadway Street. A Wells Fargo Bank housed between 12th and 13th Streets was also vandalized.
Hundreds of protesters reportedly shouted anti-Trump chants and scrawled graffiti. A citation was issued by Oakland police, but no injuries to any of the protesters or police officers were reported.
Another group of demonstrators attempted to block Highway 24, officials say. A female protester was hit by a car and suffered major injuries during the demonstration. The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
About 200 demonstrators were on the highway to the onramp, and it took police about 15 minutes to clear the accident scene, officials say. Angry demonstrators in San Francisco also protested a GOP party being held inside the Twitter building around 11:15 p.m. Tuesday.
