Dear Pastor Andy, Women are NOT Hoes
We wish this were an April Fools’ Day joke (and even then, it would be a very distasteful one), but this incident involving a pastor from North Carolina has us shaking our heads for real.
This weekend, Pastor Andy Thompson tweeted: “Ladies if you want to be the only woman your husband looks at Shine It Up! Don’t let the Hoes he comes across out shine you! #SaveMarriage.”
The pastor, who is the founder of World Overcomers Christian Church in Durham, N.C., has since deleted the tweet, but you can see a screenshot of it HERE. The controversial comment came in a series of #SaveMarriage tweets from a “Real Love Marriage” seminar.
Under no circumstances should a supposed “man of God” call a woman a hoe, a slut, or anything derogatory. After all, even Jesus hung out with the prostitutes and I highly doubt He called Mary Magdalene a hoe.
So what right then does a pastor have to do so? None.
Sadly, we’ve come to expect (and, dare I say, excuse) this type of behavior from rappers and other entertainers. But aren’t members of the clergy supposed to be held to a higher standard? Doesn’t this somehow make Pastor Andy a hypocrite?
Nobody’s perfect, I get that. I do, however, believe that Pastor Andy owes all of womankind an apology for his remark. Women deserve respect and equality everywhere, especially churches.
Updated as of 2:55 p.m. CT: Pastor Andy has responded to the controversy and apologized, saying his words were taking out of context. Watch below:
