College Student Pays Homage to Iconic Hip-Hop Covers With Graduation Photos
As the years go by, young people are becoming more creative with their proms, promposals, decorating their graduation caps and now their graduation photos.
University of North Texas alum, Mark Phillips, decided to take a creative approach to his graduation photos use them to pay homage to his favorite hip-hop album covers. Phillips recreates the album artwork from Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN, J. Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only, Chance the Rapper’s Coloring Book, Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Drake’s Nothing Was the Same.
Like most college students, Phillips listened to music while he studied, so this was his way of paying homage to the artists and albums that kept him focused.
In a statement to Complex, he said of the artists’ whose album covers he recreated, “Their music really has kept me inspired to keep pushing towards my goals.”
Along with these photos, Phillips also took traditional graduation photos for his mother.
“I didn’t tell my mom about these pictures at first,” he said. “I knew she’d be happy, but secretly she would want some regular ones to send to my family. So I took some regular ones for my family and these for my creative side/for the artists.”

I wanted to be creative with these graduation pictures while also thanking a few of my favorite artists. (S/o to Aff for taking these @cleanuniform)So I recreated their album covers with me graduating on them 😂🔥. These artists kept me focused and inspired to stay on the right path while accomplishing the goals I set for myself through their music and words.
