A South Carolina college was placed on lockdown after a fatal shooting Monday night on campus, IBT reports.

Spartanburg Methodist College did not make an announcement on the shooting, but advised students to go to their residence hall rooms and stay there until further notice.

NBC affiliate WYFF said a campus police officer was investigating a report of a car break-in and came upon two people attempting to drive away, striking the officer, who opened fire.

Representatives for the college and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division were not immediately available for comment.
