Earlier this week, former Secretary of State Colin Powell got into a heated exchange with Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly over his endorsement of President Obama in the last two presidential elections. Though a member of the Republican party, Powell has gotten slammed in the past by conservatives for his staunch support of Obama.
“So you basically said to yourself I’m still going to support the guy even though his economic policies haven’t worked for African Americans and pretty much anyone else,” O’Reilly asserted.
Powell bit back, “Why do you only see me as an African American, Bill? That troubles me. I’m an American.”
O’Reilly tried to defend his statement by saying he was referring to Powell’s complaints about the GOP not doing enough to meet the needs of specifically African Americans and minorities.
