Chicago Protesters Stage 16-hour Sit-In
Chicago protesters calling for the resignation of Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez staged a 16-hour sit-in at the city’s Cook County building Wednesday.
Alvarez and Mayor Rahm Emanuel are under pressure to step down from their positions following the release of video footage showing a white Chicago police officer fatally shooting a Black 17-year-old teen in Oct. 2014.
Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy was fired earlier this week, but activists are demanding more. Thursday’s sit-in kicked off around 9:30am, with protesters chanting, “Anita, resign! Anita, resign!”
“Together, we stand before you as a community of conscious,” Rabbi Brant Rosen said during the sit-in. “We are united in our love for Chicago and we are heartbroken by the egregious breach of trust that has occurred between our leaders and the citizens they are to serve. Laquan McDonald was murdered in cold blood by Chicago police.”
