Central Park Five Awarded $41 Million Settlement
The group of men known as the Central Park Five will finally be awarded their $41 million settlement by New York City.
In 1989, Antron McCray, Raymond Santana Jr., Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam and Kharey Wise were charged with brutally raping a female jogger in Central Park. In 1990, they were convicted and sentenced to prison.
Still maintaining their innocence, the case was reopened in 2002 and eventually the discovery was made that the DNA evidence on the victim’s clothing was linked to a serial rapist, who later confessed to the assault.
The guys, who were between 14 and 16 at the time of the wrongful conviction, will receive more than $7 million each for the nearly six years spent in prison with Wise receiving more than $12 million for nearly 13 years in prison.
“It’s a long time coming and we’re grateful that this chapter in our lives can finally be put to rest, and we can concentrate on other things,” Raymond Santana said in an interview with New York Daily News.
