#BlackBruinsMatter Born After Offensive Party
A fraternity and sorority is in trouble after throwing a “Kanye Western” themed party, which was perceived as racially and culturally offensive, according to ABC 7.
The school’s chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and Alpha Phi sorority held the party on Tuesday. Guests arrived dressed in baggy clothes and/or plumped lips and padded bottoms to look like Kanye West and Kim Kardashian.
Attendees took to social media and reported that some partygoers had painted their faces black.
“It’s kind of insane to me,” said Adrena Collins, a UCLA student. “I thought the only colors that are supposed to matter here are blue and gold.”
A statement by UCLA Media Relations reminded students that “their specific choices can cause harm and pain” to others.
Sigma Phi Epsilon and Alpha Phi are investigating the incident. In a statement, a representative of the fraternity said that the organization has “zero tolerance for racist behavior.”
A protest took place at noon Thursday at the Bruin Bear. Organizers are using the #BlackBruinsMatter hashtag to spread the word.
